ABOUT THE ARTIST
Claire Darcy is a self-taught contemporary landscape artist who resides close to the Lake District National Park. It is this location, with its weather-beaten mountains and valleys, together with those mountains of Western Scotland, that she frequently depicts in their absolute or semi-abstract form. Equally, her composition reflects the dramatic Coastline of Northern England. Claire’s landscapes usually evolve over several months where they are built up in multiple layers of paint to produce impasto - deep uneven texture that is both tangible and tactile.
She states, “I am drawn towards my immediate natural world of the Lakeland Fells and feel a deep compulsion to paint them, and to document them, as they are now, in situ. When we think of climate change and the global climate emergency, we seem to think that the Lake District National Park is somehow untouched and protected, it is not. Even casual observation reveals damage, erosion and pollution. I want to capture the beauty now before another bit of our immediate world is lost.”
Claire is an exhibited artist and accepts commissions. Her preferred medium is acrylic paint on canvas and canvas board, which she applies with palette knives, brushes, and her fingers. Photographs taken during field trips are invaluable sources of references, though she also works en plein air.
